Catching That Elusive New Customer

June 26, 2014

Being in business these days is tough, with huge competition in all areas of business and many other attractive opportunities available for customers, together with the fact that we are smarter shoppers these days, makes it harder to gain the attention of the elusive new customer.

So how does the business owner go about catching those all important new clients?  There are a few things that you can try to improve your customer database but it depends on your finances and what resources that you have available.

Existing Customers

You already have a loyal following; your customers that currently use you, know you and your products.  People are more likely to use a product or service if it’s been recommended, so a great way to utilise what you already have is to start a special offer for existing clients and a referral discount for friends and family. Joining business network groups and using business affiliations with other organisations, is another good way to attract new customers or consider starting a special offer for a particular company that one of your clients works for.

Up the Ante

Use advertising if your budget allows for it, radio and advertorials are a good way to reach new customers, however the cheapest way is to use what you already have, use your website and invest in a good social media campaign.  Statistics show that women spend more time and money shopping online compared to men, also recently we have seen a trend for seniors that are now using the internet more frequently. Take a closer look at your target audience, consider tailoring your advertisements and campaigns for those groups. Think about your products and where could you go to show them off?  Instead of waiting for customers to come to you, take your business out into the world and go look for opportunities, offer samples, or money off, or start a competition. Look also for new ways to promote, maybe teaming up with another company that sells a product or service that would compliment yours.

Spread the Word

Technology is your friend if you have a company website, make sure that it’s easy to find.  Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and keywords are very important, customers won’t spend long searching so check your website and look at what your customers are searching for and use those keywords in your descriptions. If you’re unsure then bite the bullet and pay someone to do it for you. Photographs are important so use fabulous images and clear descriptions, don’t use any technical language unless your customers know it and use it.

Keep it Clean

Remember it’s your reputation that sets you aside from the rest. Set your standards high for customer service and keep it there.  Ensure that your staff know your customer procedures and stick with them.  Offer outstanding service, something different and keep a good honest reputation.  Deal with complaints quickly and go that extra step to give good service.

Attracting new customers is the key to the survival of your business, keep things fresh and grounded, think about what you offer, it’s that point of difference that will make you stand out from the rest.

The difference between surviving and now thriving

I am a personal trainer and have been in business for many years, so motivating others to achieve, is what I do. I discovered Fiona whilst reading her business coaching article in NZ Business Magazine. That was the light bulb moment I needed. She was going to be my business personal trainer. Fiona encouraged, guided, inspired, but mostly motivated me to achieve. Her knowledge for business is outstanding and her ability to get results without adding pressure made it exciting and fun for me. Sometimes in business we need an extra pair of eyes, to see what we have and how we can build and Fiona was those eyes. Fiona was the difference between my business just surviving and now thriving. I would encourage anyone to get Fiona on board, no matter how experienced or long you have been in business.

Future-proofed my business

There are times in business when a fresh set of eyes and world experience is essential for you to grow, change or just reset. I have owned my own businesses for over 20 years, I approached Fiona for mentoring and coaching as we were/are going through an exceptional growth phase. It was one of the best decisions I have made, especially as it was proactive (rather than trying to put out fires). Fiona has helped guide my business through constructive input into systems, staff management, time management and so much more, her insights have helped shape us so we are in a future-proofed position. If you are considering a business influencer take the time to have a coffee with Fiona!

A genuine desire to help others

Working with Fiona has been amazing. She really helped me to gain more clarity on the priorities for my business over the next 12 months. What I appreciated most about Fiona’s style was that she really listened to my needs, niche, goals and working style and was able to deliver a really practical plan that meets both personal and business outcomes. She does all this from a genuine desire to help others. Thank you, Fiona.

Fiona is an incredibly talented business growth specialist. Her values-centred guidance challenged us to think beyond just “web solutions company ” and focus more on finding our specialization that would capitalize on our passions and strengths. Her knowledge of so many industries, and her willingness to connect us are particularly valuable. Her uplifting, positive, and fun personality make her easy to open up to and enjoyable to work with. She has not only been a mentor, but her strategies and lessons have inspired and motivated us to take our business forward in the right direction. Wealth of knowledge when it comes to growing a business

Fiona certainly has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to growing a business, strategic thinking and actual marketing. I can not express my appreciation enough, for the structured sessions each and every time. She allocated ample time to understand me, my business and my clients and what opportunities I can derive, before the actual process started. I believe this is what made this programme very unique, valuable and a success. Not just a copy and paste programme, as there is so much to choose from when looking for help, rather one filled with valuable tools, processes and direction. The fact that she extracted the absolute best from me, re-iterating my strengths and focusing on those, got my confidence right up there, thinking big and putting plans and goals in place. The accountability that she embeds in achieving those small ‘wins’ every week, as we worked through the process was just great. I am on my way to reaching new heights in my business and building a great brand, growing from strength to strength. Looking forward to continue my journey with Fiona going forward. Thank you
